How to equalize your speakers?

Almost all speakers and devices offer you the possibility to improve the way you listen to your music.

In this note we explain some basic tricks to adjust the equalizer according to your tastes.

Equalizing the sound of a device is about adjusting the way in which the sounds you are listening to are emitted according to the tone of the music you play.

On many stereos there are knobs that can be adjusted depending on the sound you are listening to. This adjustment is what is known as equalizing and is divided into three types of bands: treble, medium and bass.

The equalization of sounds has to do with how to find a balance so that the melodies are differentiated and enhanced, making a song, a chorus or a speech sound better.

Focusing on the music, the important thing is to equalize the three bands aiming to highlight the musical genre you are listening to. For example, if you listen to salsa, increase the high range, leave the lows in the middle and move the mids until you are happy with the sound.

If you listen to rock, you should adjust the bass more, which focuses on the electric guitar and bass, while the drums are the midtones. The secret in this case is to increase the bass to enhance the sound.

When we talk about sound in devices, we must understand that each sound that comes out of the speakers can be discreetly decomposed into a set of frequencies with different amplitudes. When you listen to a song, the singer's voice is emitted within one frequency band, the string instruments within another, and the percussion instruments within a different one. Each of these bands can be adjusted to enhance or decrease them.

The point is not only to have three band controls (low, medium and high), but it becomes a composition of several frequencies that can be adjusted. This is known as equalizing. That's when you see all those lines going up and down when sound adjustments are made.

As always, the devices are there to help you and as for sound equalization, you can search by default for the best balance of the bands depending on the type of music you are going to listen to.

Smartphone applications have very practical options in this regard.

For example, automatic equalization makes it the device itself that adapts to the music you are listening to. If you like strong rhythms like rock, the channels will increase and enhance those frequency bands where percussive sounds are detected.

However, equalization is a matter of personal taste. The important thing is to identify this function on your device. You can perform the equalization manually, adjusting the sound according to the musical genre of your preference and the performance of your equipment, until you find the optimal sound.

At Thonet & Vander we have put special emphasis on the design of our speakers, knowing that with them you will connect your devices, either via Bluetooth or through their auxiliary inputs. In this way, our speakers are designed to receive pre-equalized signals from external devices, allowing, in the vast majority of our equipment, final equalization adjustments in high and low bands, thus allowing you an optimal final equalization to fully enjoy music. Any gender.
