Where to place your speakers?

When deciding where you are going to place your speakers, there are several factors that influence: the room, the connection between the amplifier and the speakers (passive), the connection between two speakers (active) and the horizontal and vertical dispersion of the speakers. . You also have to see the manufacturer's instructions in the installation manual. The reality is that there is a kind of compendium between several things that will lead you to correctly place your speakers.

If the speakers are bookshelf type (also known as bookshelf) they can be placed on a piece of furniture, near the wall.

This is where we make a separate paragraph: speakers generally include holes for air circulation called "ports." These ports have the main function of improving the low frequencies of sound. If your speakers have them, we recommend that the port be located about 10/15 cm away. from the wall or the back of the furniture. It will improve bass response and resonance. You should always consider that the closer you put the speakers to the walls, the more likely they will be to emphasize the bass, but you should consider that the ports are not stuck to the wall or obstructed.

We also recommend that the speakers be at ear level or pointed at the listening area. This will allow you to use less volume.

If your speakers are column type, they are already designed to be placed directly on the floor. This criterion also applies to large format speakers, in which, if you rest them on surfaces that are not solid enough, you could generate vibrations that affect fidelity.

Having neat wiring will be vital and will prevent unwanted interference.

Regarding the living room, the best rooms are the rectangular ones. In a square room you are going to have a lot of resonance problems. The layout and materials of the room also play a role.

A good configuration is to form an equilateral triangle, where the speakers are in two corners and the listener is in the other.

The case of home cinema type speakers is similar: the main ones are installed following these instructions and the surround ones depending on what function they fulfill in the audio system.

In sound bars with subwoofers, the ideal is to place the bar in front of the listener and move the subwoofer as far away as possible, aiming to achieve a greater surround effect.

Once installed, it is recommended to test your speakers with the music you normally listen to, moving around the room.

Additionally, there is software for PC that will help you locate your speakers. By entering data linked to the dimensions of the room and the location of the speakers, they make measurements and suggest adjustments to maximize the sound.
